In the early 80´s thousand of young people united on what they believed to be a quest toward painting the walls and trains in New York City.

One of these young people was a 15 year old boy from the Bronx, known as Blade.

During more then a decade, Blade spend days and nights painting subway-trains in New York City. More than 5000 in total. An achievement that later gave him the title – King of graff.

This is a portrait of Blade, a man who started out as a graffiti painter, and who ended up a great artist.

I midten af 1970′erne var pop-art bevægelsen ved at drage sit sidste suk, fanget af den samme sjælløshed, kulde og samme materialistiske samfund, som det ville skildre og afsløre. En kunstart, som Andy Warhol rammende beskrev som ‘en kunst enhver kan lave’. i denne periode præget af dyb tomhed dukkede den unge afro-amerikanske graffitikunstner Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88) op på kunstscenen med en noget anden og mere dynamisk historie.

For one hour starting at noon, SABER wrote across the sky circling downtown L.A. Aside from shouting out his crew, he called for an end to the mural moratorium the city has affronted on its citizens. Since graffiti and street art are being attacked by the bureaucrats, he took to the air, right over City Hall. Shouldn’t be much of a surprise since SABER had the world’s largest graffiti piece in the L.A. riverbanks over a decade ago.

Copenhagen will play host to the first BBoy BBQ in Europe. On August 20, 2011, Mozarts Plads in Sydhavn will be filled with some of Denmarks finest BBoys and BGirls, MCs, DJs and graffiti artists, all in attendance to flex their skills, eat some good food, and celebrate hip hop culture.

Shepard Fairey piece at Jagtvej 69, Copenhagen, Denmark

So Shepard Fairey is in Copenhagen these days for his show which opens on friday at V1 Gallery in the meatpacking district. In the meantime he has some time to do some murals in the city of Copenhagen which I personally really digg! While going to paint my own wall yesterday I saw Shepard biking around Vesterbro looking at walls. Later on tweets and pics came ticking in about Shepard painting the big wall surrounding the vacant slot at Jagtvej 69 where the Youth House used to be. The outdoor project is a collaboration between Shepard, the municipality of Copenhagen and V1 Gallery. The municipality has invested 250.000kr and should the overall expenses exceed that amount Shepard has assured that he himself will pay the rest. The rumor has it he will be painting on Østerbro today otherwise I’ll see you all on friday at the show where Shepard will be dj’ing at the afterparty.
