Bates began writing graffiti in his early teens and despite his tender age soon became one of the most prolific artists within Copenhagen’s budding hip-hop scene of the mid 1980-ties. Already in 1989 he was considered among the leading elite of European graffiti artists – including names such as Loomit from Germany, Mode 2 and Bando from Paris, Delta and Shoe from Amsterdam.
With the internationalization of the European graffiti of the early 1990-ties the rumor of Bates stylistic elegance spread even further and he soon became of the most sought after artists for the big venues around the continent and overseas. In 1998 he was the second artist to be featured in On the Run’s biographical series on international graffiti writers.
In his graffiti art Bates combines a traditionalist New York feeling for style – with an emphasis on a logic flow of letters, dynamic and swinging rhythms of bars and arrows – with a European sense of technique, of sharp lines, with a graphic verve and an near flawless can control.

Maquis-art Shop & Gallery and Maurice Grinbaum presents:
“Appreciation for letters” coming up next in Paris
By: Bates & Bjorndahl. Here’s the story behind the
Bates and Niels Bjorndahl first met in 1984 when the graffiti scene was still in its infancy in Denmark.
They became fast friends and ran together thru 1986 when Bjorndahl was forced to put an end to his
graffiti career due to numerous run-ins with the local authorities.
Bjorndahl then changed his focus to abstract art while Bates continued on with graffiti.
In 2009 the two met again and started exchanging ideas and creative inputs and in the fall of 2011 they
decided to try to work on some canvases together merging abstract art and graffiti in a new style. The
result became a number of pieces where the artists experiment with different color dogmas and unusual
types of canvases. The first selection will be showcased at the exhibition ‘Appreciation for Letters’ in Paris
in the spring of 2012 in collaboration with Maquis-Art. Among the experiments, one series very much defines
the show ‘Appreciation for Letters’, namely the ‘Typograffiti’ pieces where each canvas represents a specially
selected font, which has then been spray painted onto the canvases by hand without the use of stencils. This
intricate technique and focus on the very basics of letters defines some of the purest form of graffiti that exists:
Strong letter structures that move and bend with a good flow…

‘Off the Wall’ at Lauritz.com, Carlsberg, Copenhagen
As as follow-up to the our exhibition ‘Streets of Copenhagen – street art meets graffiti’, we’ve joined up with the auction house Lauritz.com and put together a new show / auction, which kicks off today with a massive vernissage and ends up at the end of next week.
We’ve gotten our hands on a sparking white room and… wait for it…fucked it up with a lot of colours: pieces on the walls here and there and everywhere (and true to style down the hallways, too (schh, don’t tell).
The group is well represented once again. We’ve got Bates, Soten, Poet, Great and Teiser on all kinds of crazy graffiti styles and Basco5, Miss Take and Don John representing street art… And I am personally represented in collabo pieces with Bates, Soten, Miss Take and Don John…
As a special extra little thing, Soten and I have made a collabo piece, wherefrom all proceeds go to the support center for female prostitutes in Copenhagen ‘Reden’.
Please come and join us Friday Feb 10th from 5 to 9 pm or Saturday Feb 11th from 12 to 4 pm – and go to lauritz.com and see if you can get lucky and get your hands on a masterpiece at a good price (:
